SNAP: A Helping Hand

Catholic Charities' Outreach Coordinator Shares His Experiences Working with Clients Reentering Society

At Catholic Charities of North Louisiana, we believe in bringing Christ’s love to the poor and vulnerable by meeting them where they are, providing education and connecting them to resources in their communities. One of the ways we do this is by helping individuals sign up for, renew, or update their information for state services like SNAP (formerly known as food stamps). While our services are open to anyone in need, our outreach in more rural eastern parishes has uncovered a specific and urgent need among those reentering society after addiction rehabilitation or incarceration.

The transition from rehabilitation back into everyday life is never easy. Many individuals face overwhelming challenges—finding stable housing, securing employment, and simply getting access to regular meals. That’s where SNAP becomes a critical tool in helping individuals regain stability during one of the most vulnerable times in their lives.

Food insecurity is one of the first hurdles people face post-rehabilitation. Nutritious meals are essential for both physical health and mental clarity, two key elements of maintaining sobriety. With SNAP, recovering individuals can worry less about their next meal and focus more on their recovery, attending support meetings, and rebuilding their lives.

In early recovery, employment isn’t always guaranteed. Many face unemployment or underemployment, and the financial stress that follows can be a trigger for relapse. SNAP offers a buffer, helping individuals meet their basic nutritional needs while they work toward employment and independence. It also encourages responsibility—managing a grocery budget, planning meals, and learning life skills that contribute to long-term self-sufficiency.

More than just a food program, SNAP often acts as a gateway to other vital services—like Medicaid, housing support, and job readiness programs—creating a broader safety net that supports people not just in surviving, but in thriving.

At Catholic Charities, we’re committed to being a part of this journey. Our Outreach Coordinator in Northeast Louisiana makes weekly visits to Pecan Haven Addiction Recovery in Ouachita Parish and Rayville Recovery in Richland Parish. There, he assists dozens of individuals with SNAP applications and informs many more about the benefits available to them.

SNAP isn’t a handout—it’s a helping hand. And for those stepping out of rehabilitation, it can be the foundation they need to build a healthier, sober future.
